Reflections

I am a contributor to the monthly magazine Reflections, Derbyshire's largest circulation lifestyle magazine. I have been commissioned to source, research and write a number of feature articles for the magazine, focusing on Derbyshire history, people and places. You can see some examples via the links below.

Sheffield Star and Sheffield Telegraph

I wrote regular articles for the Sheffield Star and Sheffield Telegraph on behalf of the National Emergency Services Museum. I crafted engaging, timely stories that promoted the museum's work and its collection, celebrated people from Sheffield's past, and showcased hidden aspects of emergency services history. You can see some examples via the links below.

AIM Bulletin

I pitched and delivered this double-page article to the national organisation, AIM (the Association of Independent Museums) on behalf of the National Emergency Services Museum. The article tapped into current conversations about sustainability, cost-saving and innovation. It was featured in the printed AIM Bulletin, distributed to more than a thousand members organisations and stakeholders, as well as online.

Insight and Connected

As staff engagement manager at Sheffield Hallam University I launched and managed two staff magazines, Insight and Connected, reaching around 900 staff across two faculties. As editor my responsibilities included sourcing and selecting appropriate content, proofreading, and editing and fact-checking copy provided by other staff. I also produced copy for every issue of each magazine, which often involved translating complex and detailed information provided by academics and researchers into a simple, readable format suitable for the general university audience.

Circulation #2 (1)_edited.jpg

Circulation

I edited and produced copy for the National Blood Service's staff magazine, Circulation, which was distributed to 6000 staff members nationally every month. The challenge was to create relevant, engaging copy that appealed to a large and diverse readership; that was informative and useful; that created a sense of community; and that tackled, in an appropriate way, sensitive and at times controversial topics surrounding public health.

Newview

I was part of the writing team for Sheffield Hallam University's Newview magazine, which was distributed to all university staff as well as external partners, supporters and others. I produced feature-length articles as well as short-form news items. As well as pitching stories to the editing team, I also wrote to order where required, responding to commissions and working to tight deadlines. The aim was to engage readers with the work of the university, and create a sense of community among a disparate and widely-spread readership.

The Donor

While at the National Blood Service I provided regular content for The Donor magazine, which was distributed to thousands of blood donors across the UK. Articles were assigned to me by the editing team, which I researched and wrote, often interviewing patients, donors and well-known supporters. The challenge was to create a sense of community and pride among the donor population by highlighting good news stories, and discussing the difficulties and challenges regarding blood donation and supply in an accessible, approachable and understandable way.
